About

Strange Creatures: A Halloween Character & Storytelling Intensive , LIVE on ZOOM What makes a creature feel like it has a life beyond the page? Where does it live? How does it move? What does it collect, hide, or dream about? In this live, 2-hour online workshop, we’ll use Halloween as a starting point to invent strange characters and build the worlds around them. Inspired by the creatures and puppets I’ve made for videos and productions, we’ll move through music, memory, drawing, collage, and storytelling prompts. You’ll explore your creature’s personality, shape, colors, textures, and movement, then imagine the space it inhabits and a moment in its story. Maybe your creature becomes a Halloween costume or mask. Maybe it grows into a puppet, a set of decorations, or a whole strange scene for your home. You’ll leave with a character concept and ideas for bringing it into the real world. Your creature can be spooky, silly, beautiful, awkward, mysterious, or something you don’t have a name for yet. Come with whatever materials you have nearby. This workshop is for artists, writers, performers, makers, and curious people of all levels. No drawing or puppet-making experience needed. A list of materials and recommended supplies will be sent with the Zoom link once you register class will include the same themes as Visual Worlds for music, but creature-based! Invent a creature from a sound, a memory, or a strange place. Find its character through quick prompts: Build its visual language with shape, color, texture, costume, or puppet ideas. Make a small final piece: a character sketch or collage plus a short scene, puppet concept, or stage setting.
